Our founding mission: Bridging the gap

Community Tides Inc. began when local food share distributions ended due to government shutdown. We recognized the critical need for families who relied on these services, and though we lacked the financial resources to replace them entirely, we were driven to act. Our journey started with traveling to another county to collect food shares, bringing them back to families in Elroy Mauston and New Lisbon, Wisconsin, who needed them most. This small effort quickly revealed a much larger demand than we had ever imagined, sparking an important question: How can we make food more accessible every single day, not just during limited distribution times?

Introducing the Community Care Cabinets

This pressing question led to the birth of our Community Care Cabinets. Inspired by the success of little free pantries, we envisioned creating accessible points where anyone could discreetly pick up essential items whenever they were needed. These cabinets are designed to be a silent beacon of support, available 24/7. Today, our network of cabinets is expanding through valuable partnerships with local libraries and other community hubs. Our ultimate goal is to strategically place these Community Care Cabinets throughout Juneau County, ensuring that help is always within reach for those who need it most.

Dustin Nicholson: Founder & visionary

Dustin Nicholson, the founder of Community Tides Inc., has a lifelong dedication to helping others. As an EMT, he has witnessed firsthand the needs within the community, which fueled his passion to create an organization that provides tangible support. His drive to serve and his commitment to the well-being of his neighbors laid the groundwork for our accessible community initiatives.

Danielle Kalan: Co-founder & advocate

Danielle Kalan, co-founder of Community Tides Inc. and Dustin’s wife, brings a profound personal perspective to our mission. Having grown up in the foster care system, she deeply understands the importance of support and the feeling that "there has never been enough help for people." Her experiences ignite her passion to ensure that Community Tides Inc. provides comprehensive and compassionate assistance, continually striving to bridge gaps and offer unwavering support to those in need.
